Visualizing the global terrorism database
UPDATE: This project no longer functions.
This project uses the Global Terrorism Database, open-source database of terror incidents around the world maintained by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland.
I wanted the data visualization team at PRI to do a data-first project so we could show the rest of the newsroom what this kind of approach really looked like. I chose the GTD because, unfortunately, terrorism is always relevant and always a conversation. We chose to visualize this through the lens of a single day, trying to highlight the parts of the world where there is a steady drumbeat of terror and violence.
In addition to the interactive, my team published two stories with analysis for the 2016 data. I wireframed and designed the layout, as well as served as an editor and project manager for the whole process. (Note: Project no longer functions as when originally published.)
