Al Jazeera had been scraping speed data for Amtrak trains when Amtrak 188 derailed in Philadelphia.
We were able to quickly analyze the data and see how fast the train in question was traveling at the time of the crash and compare it with others. I worked with AJAM colleague Michael Keller to produce quick maps on deadline showing the speed of the train. AJAM knew before any other organization that Amtrak 188 was traveling in excess of 100 mph heading into the curve where it derailed.
